Pro tip: If you walk out when it's damp, use the provided foot wash. ![]() If it's rained recently, it could be even wetter. Not a problem to walk on, but quite a bit different. Early summer, on the other hand, it's probably going to be damp and pretty slushy. Note that the surface varies considerably late summer, it's the hard-crusted image you see in car commercials. It's really cool if you're into alien environments. From there, you can easily walk out and onto the seemingly endless expanse of flat salt and get a feel for what it's like to stand on it. ![]() ![]() While the eastbound side has a tower to climb up, most of the salt is to the north of the highway, so the westbound side is much better. The most obvious is the rest stops on each side of the freeway just east of Wendover, near the western edge of the flats. There's really three entirely separate parts of the salt flats experience, depending on when and where you go.
